연초부터 다양한 매체로 부터 회자되는 ‘통섭(統攝, Concilience)‘
학문을 넘나드는 지식의 융합(?)이 핵심인데, 스티브잡스, 아리스토텔레스, 다빈치, 다산 정약용등의 사례를 들며 최근 미디어를 통해 학생이나 CEO가 갖춰야 할 필수요소(?)처럼 포장되고 있습니다.
그러나, ‘통섭’은 무엇이든 다 잘할 줄 아는 ‘팔방미인’과는 다르게 해석되어야 하며, 또한 CEO 와 시니어급에게는 ‘통섭’이 ‘실무’가 아닌 ‘전략’에 적용되어야 합니다.
예를 들어, IT비전문가 출신 CEO가 웹서비스 구축을 위해 프로그래밍을 배워 직접 하는게 아닌, 프로그래밍 지식을 익히고, 그에 맞는 인력과 전략을 짜야 한다는 의미 입니다.
(설사, 프로그래밍 지식을 익혀서 웹서비스를 직접 구축했어도 그것은 성공적인 프로젝트라고 보기 어렵지요.)
위의 이야기가 아주 당연한 것 같지만, ‘팔방미인’의 압박에 내몰리는 CEO와 시니어들에게 미디어에서 포장된 ‘통섭’은 ‘내가(혹은 조직의 매니저가) 뭐든지 할 수 있어야 한다’라는 보다 큰 압박으로 해석될 수도 있기 때문입니다.
더불어, 조직내에서 ‘팔방미인’형의 조직원이 있다면(스스로 원하던 원치 않던…) 그에 대한 능력평가는 최우선으로 하 되, 그 사람이 ‘팔방미인 형’으로 움직이는 이유에 대한 원인을 꼼꼼히 분석할 필요가 있다.

통섭이란 단어의 원어 콘실리언스(Concilience)는 미국 하버드 대학의 진화생물학자 윌슨(Edward O. Wilson)이 모든 학문에 공통되는 사실을 언급하는 19세기 때의 단어를 복구한 것이다.
학문 간의 자유로운 넘나듬이나 소통의 의미로 Concilience라는 개념을 번역하면서 기존에 사용되던 컨버젼스(Convergence) 퓨전(fusion) 인터그레이션(integration)또는 통합, 융합, 융복합, 병합, 합일, 통일 등의 용어를 사용하기에는 개념설명 상 의미전달이 부족하고 불편해서 각고의 노력 끝에 한자를 조합했다한다.
